Easy Rider

It's July.

Some of us live in California - we have cars, we go to the beach and we might even take a roadtrip to some place nicer than where we actually live.

Some of us live in New York City - we work six days, we take the subway and we sure as hell don't wear helmets on our motorcycles.

This one is for all you assholes in California, I wish I was there.

March Mix...

Here's a weird one, I'm not sure why it's the Funky Jungle Book. Obviously, there's too much Nilsson. Delete it if you want to. Also, I dare you to play that Exuma track after dark and not bring the house down.

Suggested supplemental viewing: Altman's Popeye & The Long Goodbye, Pat Garret & Billy The Kid, Get Carter (1971) and The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.

Eastern Promises: A Mix

It's been a bit since my last post but I've been hard at work putting together my first mix for the blog. I know I used a bunch of songs I've probably already played too many times in various vehicles and house parties but I hope that everyone can find a little something they've never heard before. Many thanks to funky16corners, diddywah, ear fuzz, and soul sides.

Download, Unzip and Burn to CD.

The Bees

I just recently scooped up the three releases from these guys and have been having trouble not listening to the albums back to back to back. The newest album, Octopus, is definitely the funkiest, with plenty of horns and drums out in the front of the mix. Free the Bees is more rock - less boom bap. And their last, Sunshine Hit Me, they recorded in their garage in 2002 and sounds like Magical Mystery Tour and Mutations holding hands at the fair.

A lot of people write about their throwback sound, talking smack bout how they're ripping off folks like the Kinks and stuff. Listening to their first two albums I might agree with those critics, but with the new jam I think they're operating in a different environment - somewhere between CCR, Steel Pulse, Booker T, Beck and RJD2. Octopus sounds like a rock and roll record recorded and issued by Daptone and I like it.

Let me know what you think, I can't really figure them out.

The Bees: Stand, Wash In The Rain, Left Foot Stepdown, The Russian, No Atmosphere and Who Knows What The Question Is ?
From: Octopus, Free The Bees and Sunshine Hit Me.

Cuddle up folks, they write love songs too.

I can't believe I almost forgot to post this - The Chicken Payback.

chicken!
pay the chicken back
backpay the chickenback
pay back the chickenback
